MonsterAdapter’s new LA-FE1 adds AF support to Nikon AF-I, AF-P and AF-S lenses on select Sony cameras

Lens adapter gurus MonsterAdapter has announced the details of the LA-FE1, a new adapter that brings autofocus to Nikon AF-I, AF-S and AF-P lenses when used with select Sony mirrorless cameras.

MonsterAdapter claims in its announcement that it’s already developed a Nikon to Sony autofocus adapter in the past, but it was sold under an unspecified brand name. MonsterAdapter said this version, which will bear the company’s logo, is ‘greatly improved both in firmware and hardware.’

In its current form, the adapter all give autofocus capabilities to Nikon AF-I, AF-S and AF-P lenses. For lenses with full support, the adapter will also drive both electromagnetic and mechanical lever aperture diaphragms. Fully-manual lenses and screw-drive lenses don’t get any sort of focus or aperture control, but the adapter will still work passively with them.

The adapter will also power stabilization if the lens you’re using offers it. Better yet, it will work in conjunction with Sony’s in-body image stabilization for additional vibration compensation.

Since autofocus is powered by the camera the adapter is attached to, the adapter will work with Sony’s Human and Animal Eye-AF, as well as high-speed continuous shooting (up to 10 frames per second on compatible cameras). As for supported cameras, below are the cameras the LA-FE1 fully supports:

  • a7 II (firmware version 2.0 or higher), a7 III
  • a7R II, a7R III, a7R IV
  • a7S III
  • a7C
  • a9, a9 II
  • a6100, a6300, a6400, a6500, a6600

The following cameras will work with ‘limited or no AF functions:’ a7, a7R, a7S, a7S II, a5000, a5100, a6000, NEX series cameras

The lens adapter will also feature a built-in Micro USB port for updating the firmware down the road.

MonsterAdapter says in its announcement post that the LA-FE1 is currently available for sale in China through its online shop and authorized dealers, but no information on pricing or international sales is available at this time. We have contacted the MonsterAdapter team on Facebook for more information.
