Leica has unveiled the details of its new limited-edition matte black version of its Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH M-mount lens.
Aside from the matte black paint job, the new lens remains mostly unchanged from the original version, which was released back in 2016 and available in both black and silver colorways. The only physical difference is the lens hood, which is now integrated and can be pulled out when needed. The original Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH used a screw-on lens hood.

Internally, the lens is still constructed of nine elements in six groups, including an aspherical element. Other features include an aperture range of F2 through F16, a ten-blade aperture diaphragm, a 70cm (2.3′) minimum focusing distance and a 46mm front filter thread.
Leica says the matte black paint offers additional scratch resistance and, unlike the original, which highlighted the aperture numbers and distance scales in white and yellow paint for the black model and black and red paint for the silver model, this matte black model uses what Leica refers to as a ‘neutral green’ color.

Leica says only 450 matte black Summicron-M 28mm F2 ASPH units have been produced, all of which will be available exclusively at Leica Stores for $4,495.
