Leica adds 12-bit Cinema 4K Raw video recording, improved AF features and more to its SL2-S

Leica has released significant firmware updates for its Leica SL2 and SL2-S full frame mirrorless camera systems.

Firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL2-S sees the camera gain the ability to output Cinema 4K Raw video at up to 60 frames per second (fps) to compatible external recorders over HDMI. This means you will now be able to capture 12-bit Raw video with Atomos’ Ninja V and Ninja V+, as well as Blackmagic’s Video Assist 12G HDR recorders.

Aside from the Raw video capture, firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL2–2 and firmware version 4.0 for the Leica SL2 are effectively identical. The updates include an updated face detection autofocus (AF) mode that now lets you choose which eye on a face you prioritize, as well as the ability to move the AF area back and forth between its most recent location and the center of a frame.

Leica has also added an exposure and depth-of-field preview button, increased the number of functions that can be assigned to the custom function (FN) button on compatible SL-System lenses, made it so ISO sensitivity can be controlled using both the thumb wheel and front settings dial and the ability to rate photos and videos using the joystick.

Other minor improvements include improved geotagging when the camera is paired with Leica’s FOTOS app, the ability to choose either 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments for ISO sensitivity and the ability to turn off the power saving mode, which makes it possible to deactivate the autofocus shut-off when recording videos over HDMI. There are also other unspecified bug fixes for both camera systems.

Firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL-2 and firmware version 4.0 for the Leica SL2 are available to download from Leica’s website.
