iQOO 15R First Impression: Snappy & Powerful

iQOO 15R has launched in India, starting at Rs 44,999, and it looks like an appealing device, not only where specifications are concerned but also literally in terms of looks. Here’s our first impression of the iQOO 15R with a full detailed review set to be released soon.

Speaking of the in-hand feel and design first, the iQOO 15R is a compact device compared to other options we get in the market these days with displays going up to 6.9 inches. The device has an aluminium flat frame and is slightly on the thicker side.

However, the heft adds to the premium feel that is complemented by the matte finish glass on the back. The triumph silver shade we got is the more unique one (and the more appealing) out of the two colour options the device is available in. The checkered design isn’t something we see on smartphones so that creates a good identity for the device as well. The iQOO 15R is also IP68 plus IP69 rated so water and dust shouldn’t be an issue for it to handle.

You also get a clear TPU case inside the box along with a 100W charger and a USB-C to USB-C cable aside from the manuals and a SIM ejector tool.

On the front, there’s a 6.59-inch (2750 x 1260 pixels) 1.5K AMOLED 19.64:9 display with a 144Hz refresh rate, 459 ppi, 360Hz touch sampling rate, up to 5000 nits peak brightness, HDR10+, 4320Hz PWM dimming, and P3 colour gamut support. So far, the display seems gorgeous to look at. The bezels are quite thin although they aren’t even on all sides. The picture seems vibrant and the content looks sharp. Under the display is a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Performance wise, we get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Processor paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5x Ultra RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. The performance seems snappy and smooth according to our usage patterns so far. We’ll be sharing more about the device’s gaming performance, RAM management, etc., in the full review.

The handset runs on Origin OS 6 based on Android 16 which is a major improvement over FunTouch OS and solves a notable pain point of iQOO devices, which was software. The software experience remains largely similar to what we experienced with the iQOO 15 but it has its upsides and downsides which we’ll talk about in detail soon.

Connectivity options on the device include GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth v6.0, and 5G, all of which seem to work flawlessly. The 5G reception is stable even on the 19th floor where my iPhone generally gives up and sticks to 4G. There’s also an IR blaster which is an underrated feature in my opinion.

The device packs a 7600mAh battery with 100W fast wired charging support. While we already have our expectations set when it comes to the battery backup of the iQOO 15R, it remains to be seen whether the device will live up to those.

For optics, there’s a 50MP f/1.88 Sony LYT-700V primary sensor paired with an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle sensor. There’s a 32MP f/2.45 sensor on the front for selfies. Again, the cameras remain to be tested and we’ll share our findings in the upcoming iQOO 15R full review so stay tuned.
