iPhone 12 Pro Max video teardown shows what sensor shift image stabilization is all about

This year the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t differ from the Pro in just size (with the usual implications regarding screen area and battery capacity). Apple’s also tweaked the camera setup, bringing to the market its first sensor shift image stabilization system for the main camera of the Pro Max.

YouTuber Zach from JerryRigEverything has thus decided to dilligently go looking for what makes this different, by peeking right at the sensor itself. In order to do that, though, a full teardown of the iPhone 12 Pro Max was required. Thankfully, it’s all recorded on video for your viewing pleasure.

The housing of the main camera sensor is definitely huge compared to what’s in the iPhone 12 Pro non-Max, but it makes sense considering how the new image stabilization process works. Sensor shift is more akin to In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) seen in DSLRs and pro cameras of all sorts, compared to the usual lens shift type which has been common so far in smartphones.

The camera sensor itself looks bigger too, but we can’t tell you its exact size because Apple isn’t a fan of publishing such information. Stay tuned for our review of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, though, which is coming very soon to let you know if this model is worth buying just for its camera system or not.
