Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro rumored to get four Android updates, five years of security patches

Rumors have been cropping up time and again over the past few months that Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would have a wider support window than usual, and today we have some actual rumored numbers to think about.

According to what is a yet-unconfirmed rumor, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will get four major Android updates as well as five years of security patches after their official launch later this month.

If this pans out, it means that the two Pixels launched in 2021 will be updated all the way up to Android 16 in 2025, and receive security updates until October 2026.

It would be the first time Google has undertaken such a long support window, and if it does actually end up promising this, it will sort of match Apple in device longevity (at least software-wise).

Whether this will contribute to the Pixel line becoming more successful in the future is unclear, but it all depends on your (and Google’s) definition of success. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will still only be sold in a handful of countries, and distribution is a huge part of success, perhaps even more so than software support.
