Google Makes Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive More Personal and Context-Aware

Google is rolling out enhanced capabilities for Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive which make it more personal and context-aware. With these enhancements, when you select your sources, Gemini can now pull relevant information from your files, emails and the web to “securely connect dots and uncover useful insights, while keeping your information safeguarded,” according to Google.

Gemini in Docs: What’s New?

Gemini in Docs is being positioned as a writing assistant that can help create and edit documents using context from a user’s files. Users can describe what they want in the side panel or bottom prompt bar, and Gemini will generate a first draft based on relevant documents. For example, it can create a newsletter using meeting notes and event lists stored in a user’s files.

The tool can also refine sections of a document, adjust tone or rewrite content based on prompts. New options such as “Match writing style” can help maintain a consistent voice across a document, while “Match doc format” can replicate the structure of a reference document and automatically populate it with relevant information.

Gemini in Sheets: What’s New?

Gemini is also getting expanded capabilities in Google Sheets. Instead of manually building spreadsheets, users can describe what they want to track and Gemini will generate a structured sheet with tables and relevant data. The system can also help expand existing spreadsheets by adding dashboards, organising data or generating missing information.

A new “Fill with Gemini” option allows users to populate tables quickly, summarise data or fetch information from the web. For example, it could automatically fill in details such as application deadlines or tuition fees when tracking college applications.

Gemini in Slides: What’s New?

In Google Slides, Gemini is being integrated as a design assistant. It can generate slide layouts, diagrams and individual slides based on prompts while aligning them with the theme of the existing presentation.

Users can also ask Gemini to make changes such as adjusting colours or simplifying a slide’s design. Google says it is also working on a feature that will allow users to generate entire presentations from a single prompt, with relevant context pulled from files, emails and the web.

Gemini in Drive: What’s New?

Google Drive is also getting new AI-powered search capabilities. With the “Ask Gemini” feature, users can search their files using natural language and receive an AI-generated summary at the top of the results. The summary highlights relevant information and includes citations from the user’s files. A new “Ask Gemini in Drive” feature also allows users to ask broader questions across documents, emails, calendar entries and web results, helping them extract insights from multiple sources at once.

New Gemini Features Across Google Apps: Availability

The new features are starting to roll out today in beta and will be first available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers – available in English globally for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, and in the U.S. for Google Drive.
