Google Announces March 2026 Pixel Drop with AI Icons, Now Playing App, and More; New Android Features Also Announced

Google has announced a load of new features for Pixel devices with the March 2026 Pixel Drop along with a bunch of new features for all Android devices. The new Pixel drop update brings a new Now Playing app, ability to generate custom icons for home screen with AI, and much more.

March 2026 Pixel Drop: New Features

Pixel Phones

One of the updates focuses on Circle to Search on the Pixel 10 series. The feature can now identify individual clothing items within an image, allowing users to circle an outfit and get a breakdown of each piece. There’s also a new “Try it On” feature that works with videos, social media content or images received in messages, giving users a preview of how certain clothing might look on them.

Google is also expanding the capabilities of Magic Cue with Gemini on the Pixel 10 series, excluding the Pixel 10a. The feature can suggest restaurant searches directly within conversations. For example, if friends are discussing places to eat in a group chat, the phone can automatically suggest relevant restaurant options based on the discussion.

The Now Playing feature has also been updated. Available on the Pixel 6 and newer models, it is now offered as a standalone App that can be downloaded and updated through the Google Play Store.

Several upgrades are coming to the At a Glance widget as well. On Pixel 7 and newer phones, the widget can now show real-time updates for daily commutes, including departure times, delays and alternative routes. Pixel 6 and newer devices will also see live sports scores for followed teams during matches, as well as end-of-day updates from stocks in a user’s Google Finance watchlist. These features are not available on the Pixel Tablet.

Personalisation options are also expanding where Pixel 6 and newer phones and foldables can now generate custom AI-based app icons, allowing users to apply one of six styles to create a consistent look across their home screen. Google is also adding themed content with new SpongeBob SquarePants seasonal theme packs, which are available on Pixel 6 and newer devices.

Some Pixel 10 series models, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, can now use Gemini to handle certain repetitive tasks such as ordering groceries or booking rides. The system works with supported apps in the background while still keeping the user in control.

A new Comfort View option is also arriving on the Pixel 10 series, excluding the Pixel 10a. It introduces a refined display colour filtering mode designed to reduce visual strain caused by very bright or saturated colours.

Another notable addition is a desktop-style experience for Pixel phones. On Pixel 8 devices and newer that support USB-C DisplayPort output, users can connect their phone to an external monitor and use a multi-window Android desktop interface with a keyboard and mouse.

Finally, the Pixel Tablet is getting improved desktop-style window management, allowing users to arrange and resize overlapping windows in a way that resembles a traditional desktop interface.

Furthermore, existing features in Pixel devices like Scam Detection, Call Notes, Notification Summaries, AI features in the Journal app, are being expanded to more locations around the world.

Pixel Watches

With the March 2026 Pixel Drop, Google improved how Pixel Watch works with a paired phone. The watch can now alert users if they accidentally leave their phone behind and automatically lock the phone once it moves out of range. When both devices are connected, they can also perform identity checks faster to enable smoother and more secure access.

Google has also added Find Hub support to Pixel Watch. This allows users to locate their devices directly from the watch. If a device is within Bluetooth range, it can be made to ring, while devices that are farther away can be located on a map with directions provided on the watch.

Gesture controls are expanding as well. The one-handed gestures introduced on Pixel Watch 4 are now coming to Pixel Watch 3. With gestures such as double pinch or wrist movements, users can answer calls, take photos or control workout music without touching the screen.

Payments are also getting a small update with a new Express Pay option. When enabled, users can make payments by simply tapping the watch on a compatible reader without opening the Google Wallet app first.

Google is also expanding safety features on the watch. A new standalone earthquake alert system can notify users about nearby earthquakes in real time, potentially giving them a few seconds of warning.

Satellite SOS, which was initially launched on Pixel Watch 4 in the contiguous United States, is now expanding to additional regions including Canada, Europe, Alaska and Hawaii.

New Features on Android

New features for Android March 2026

Beyond the March 2026 Pixel Drop that remains exclusive to Pixel devices, Google is also bringing new features to Android in general.

One of the updates brings location sharing directly into Google Messages. With support from Find Hub, users can now share their live location within a conversation and view each other on a real-time map. This can be useful when coordinating meetups or arranging pickups, and location sharing can be stopped at any time.

Find Hub is also gaining a feature aimed at helping recover lost luggage. If a tracker tag has been attached to a bag, users can generate a location-sharing link and provide it to participating airlines. This allows airline staff to view the tracker’s location and assist in locating the bag while still giving users control over when the location is shared or disabled.

Google Play is also introducing a new way to discover apps through short-form videos. The feature, called Google Play Shorts, will show brief clips demonstrating how apps work. The feed will include content from categories such as wellness, photography, shopping and webtoons, giving users a quick preview before downloading an app.

Another addition is the Calling Card feature, which allows users to customise how they appear when making calls. People can create a caller ID profile with a photo, custom font and colour, and choose whether to share it with everyone or only saved contacts. The Calling Card can also be edited or removed at any time.

Android Auto is also getting new kid-friendly games that can be played while the vehicle is parked. The “Teacher Approved” titles are designed for children aged 3 to 12 and include games such as Disney Coloring World, LetraKid: Writing ABC for Kids, Marvel HQ: Kids Super Hero Fun, Draw a Stickman: EPIC 3, and Kids Games for Toddlers.

Google is also expanding Emoji Kitchen with new sticker combinations.
