Panasonic has announced new firmware will become available for the Lumix GH6 on July 5, 2022, that will bring ProRes RAW recording at frame rates of up to 119.88p in DCI 4K and 59.94p in 5.7K when the camera is tethered to the Atomos Ninja V+. The original Ninja V only supports up to 59.94p in DCI 4K and 29.97p in 5.7, so the newer V+ is needed for the higher frame rate options.

Anamorphic shooters will get ProRes RAW 4:3 in 5.8K at up to 29.97p and 4.4K at up to 59.94p with the Ninja V+, or 5.8K-A up to 25p with the original Ninja V.

Further new features added to the Lumix GH6 will include a host of new internal ProRes 422 HQ and 422 recording codecs at resolutions lower than the current 5.7K options. Users will be able to record in DCI 4K or 1080 at up to 59.94p. The lower resolution and bitrates allow 1080 ProRes recordings to be made directly to SD cards as well as to the CFexpress slot: currently all ProRes recording have to be recorded to a CFexpress card.

The firmware announcement makes no mention of regular, 16:9 UHD 4K resolutions ProRes or ProRes RAW, or of ProRes options for anamorphic recording. Neither does it mention the promised ability of the GH6 to record to an external hard drive via USB-C.

Firmware v2.0 for the Lumix GH6 will be made available for download on 5th July via the Lumix Global website. For more information see the Panasonic website.
