Gear in this story

Last year, we took Nikon’s Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S lens out for a spin, capturing a batch of test images around Seattle. The long-awaited lens promised to be a more versatile and affordable alternative to Nikon’s premium Z 24-70mm F2.8 S while offering better image quality and a faster maximum aperture than the Z 24-200mm F4-6.3 VR.

The first batch of images we captured showed excellent performance overall but did display some unwelcome corner softness at certain settings. Nothing out of the ordinary for a complex zoom, but noticeable enough in some situations to take the shine off a little, and send us in search of a second sample.

We’ve spent the past few months shooting with a new copy of the Z 24-120mm F4 S, taking it up and down the west coast of the USA as well as on a short trip to Berlin earlier this summer. We’re pleased to report that it improves on the already very good performance of our original sample; check out the results for yourself in our new gallery, shot with the Nikon Z7 and Z9.
