Fujifilm’s GFX 100, GFX 100S can now capture 12-bit Blackmagic RAW via HDMI with Blackmagic recorders

As it announced it would during its X Summit Prime 2021 event last month, Fujifilm has released updates for its GFX 100 and GFX 100S medium format cameras that brings the ability to capture Blackmagic RAW video up to DCI 4K 30 frames per second (fps) when paired with a compatible Blackmagic recorder.

Back in June 2020, the Fujifilm GFX 100 received a firmware update that enabled it to capture ProRes RAW video over HDMI when paired with Atomos’ Ninja V recorder. This capability was passed on to the GFX 100S, which was announced in early 2021. Not wanting to be left out, Blackmagic teamed up with Fujifilm to ensure its 12-bit Raw video format, Blackmagic RAW, would also be compatible with the hybrid medium format camera systems.

Firmware version 1.20 for the GFX 100S and firmware version 4.10 for the GFX 100 add the ability to record 12-bit Blackmagic RAW video over HDMI when paired with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist 7”12G HDR and Video Assist 5” 12G HDR monitor/recorders. The Blackmagic RAW recording feature is in the same location as ProRes RAW recording under the cameras’ ‘F-Log/HLG/RAW RECORDING’ location in the movie menu. As with ProRes RAW, Blackmagic RAW can be recorded at DCI 4K resolution up to 30 fps.

In addition to recording the Raw footage externally to compatible Blackmagic recorders, you can also simultaneously record footage to the internal SD card with the Film Simulation/F-Log/Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) codecs. The firmware updates also bring various bug fixes to both camera systems.

You can download firmware version 1.20 for the GFX 100S and firmware version 4.10 for the GFX 100 on Fujifilm’s website.
