Tesla and Spacex CEO Elon Musk has expressed that Tesla should enable dogecoin as a payment method for its vehicles “at some point.” He exclaimed, “Dogecoin to the moon,” as he explained his reason for backing the meme cryptocurrency. “Lots of rich people were supporting bitcoin … But people on the line [at Tesla and Spacex] want me to support DOGE,” the billionaire revealed.
Elon Musk Says ‘Dogecoin to the Moon’
Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla should enable DOGE payments for its vehicles during an event at Tesla’s Giga Berlin on Wednesday. Musk was asked by an audience member about the possibility of purchasing Tesla vehicles with DOGE. “When can you buy a Tesla with dogecoin?” Musk repeated the question before replying:
At some point, I think we should enable that … Dogecoin to the moon.
Musk pointed out that customers can already purchase some merchandise on the Tesla website using DOGE, “which is cool,” he said.
The billionaire also shared a story of why he became an avid supporter of dogecoin. “A lot of people maybe don’t know the reason that I actually ended up, sort of … somewhat endorsing dogecoin,” Musk began. “When I was walking around the factory at Tesla, some people were just, you know, working the line … and they said: ‘Can you please support DOGE?’” He further shared: “Also, I was at Spacex and also just, you know, working in the factory and some regular guys just said: ‘Hey can you support DOGE?’ I was like, you know what, DOGE are the people’s crypto. So, I will support it.” He continued:
Lots of rich people were sporting bitcoin … But people on the line want me to support DOGE. I’ll support DOGE.
Musk has a long history of championing dogecoin. He is known in the crypto community as the Dogefather. He previously disclosed that he owns dogecoin, bitcoin, and ether. In January, he confirmed that he still owns “a bunch of dogecoin.” However, he denied being a dogecoin whale. A recent onchain analysis revealed that Tesla owns 11,509 bitcoins and Spacex owns 8,285 BTC. In 2021, Tesla briefly accepted bitcoin for vehicle payments.
Some investors are unhappy with the way Musk promoted dogecoin, however. The billionaire is facing a $258 billion lawsuit by some DOGE investors who suffered financial losses after investing in the meme cryptocurrency.
This was not the first time Musk said “dogecoin to the moon.” He said the same in November 2022, for example. In June 2022, he vowed to keep buying and supporting DOGE. In May 2022, he said dogecoin has potential as a currency. Last year, he re-offered to eat a McDonald’s Happy Meal on TV if the fast food chain accepts dogecoin for payments.
