CEO: half of Realme phones launched in India this year will have 5G connectivity

Carriers in India are ready to launch their 5G networks, though they are holding off until the government auctions off better spectrum. Realme is determined to have a 5G-capable phone in the hands of many before that even happens.

“Realme aims to be the 5G populariser in India, in Europe and other global markets,” CEO Madhav Sheth told . For the Indian market specifically, half of the new models unveiled in 2021 will be 5G-enabled.

Also, all Realmes that cost INR 20,000 or higher will have 5G connectivity. The Realme X7 series (announced last week) starts at INR 20,000, for example (less if you are part of the company’s upgrade program). That is with a Dimensity 800U chipset, MediaTek also has the Dimensity 700 for lower cost models (and Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 480).

Airtel’s CTO forecasts that 5G phones in the INR 10-15,000 range are necessary to drive mass adoption of the next generation network technology. Airtel conducted the first 5G test in India a couple of weeks ago while Rival Jio claims it will launch its 5G network later this year.

“With everything moving online – work, education, payments – the dependency of consumers on technology has increased,” says Sheth. “Consumers nowadays are more inclined towards adopting a connected and tech-empowered lifestyle and 5G is bound to play a pivotal role in building this lifestyle for them.”
