Canon shows first footage from its unusual RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens

Earlier this month, Canon announced an unusual addition to its RF lens lineup, the Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens. It’s the world’s first digital interchangeable lens that captures stereoscopic 180° images onto a single image sensor for processing in virtual reality (VR) software.

When the lens was announced, we saw its design, but Canon didn’t publish any images or video recorded using the new VR-centric optic. However, Canon Japan has since published 4K VR footage, which can be seen below. You can use the controller in the top left corner to move around the frame. Just a heads up for sensitive viewers, there are some bright flashing lights in the video.

The RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens will be available in early 2022 for $1,999. The lens’s unique folded design includes 24 elements in 20 total groups. Each of the two lenses has a dozen elements in 10 groups. There are four ultra-low dispersion elements in each of the two lenses. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm (7.9″) and includes a built-in gelatin filter holder for using filters, including a neutral density filter.

Alongside the lens, Canon announced a firmware update for the Canon EOS R5 to allow compatibility with the VR lens and new EOS VR software solutions for conversion and processing. There will be a Canon EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro. The software will be available via subscription.
