Canon Launches RF 24mm f/1.8 and 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 Wide Lenses

RF24mm and RF15-30mm

Canon has announced two new lenses for the RF mount: the RF24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM and RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Both pieces of glass are compact, lightweight, and wide-angle.

Both lenses, designed for EOS R, are “ideal for entry-level and photography enthusiasts looking for the next lens after the standard zoom,” says Canon.

Canon RF24mm f/1.8

The Canon RF24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM lens, priced at $599.99, is a large-diameter, wide-angle fixed focal length lens designed for capturing bright and clear images with beautiful bokeh and macro capabilities to get even closer to a subject.

Will Cadenea, a wedding and portrait photographer, says that he “loves” the lens. “It helps give you the feeling you are right there in the action, and the focal length really directs your eye to the center of the frame.”

The new 24mm has a built-in STM motor that tracks focus with natural movement, making the new lens handy for video and has been designed with vlogging and other social media activity in mind. The fast f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for control over depth-of-field and bokeh. It also enables the shooter to operate in low light, and help with video recording. The glass has an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element, one aspheric element, and Canon Super Spectra Coating (SSC)to help minimize ghosting and flare.

The minimum focus distance is an ultra-close 0.14 meters and has a close-up magnification of 0.5x while at the minimum focus distance. The optical image stabilization has a shake correction up to 5.5 stops which “makes it easy to film handheld, so you can stay light on your feet and move about freely,” writes travel vlogger, Juliana Broste.

The lens has an approximate 38mm coverage when attached to a camera with an APS-C image sensor and is lightweight at just 270 grams.

“I’ve got options–whether I’m standing super close to my subject or backing up to get a sense of a place, I’m covered,” adds Broste.

The RF24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM will be available in late August for $600.

Canon RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3

Canon’s new wide zoom lens, prices at $549.99, gives the photographer a 24-48mm field of view when it’s attached to a camera with an APS-C image sensor. It too has UD glass elements, one aspheric element, and CAanon SSC to help minimize ghosting and flare.

The optical image stabilization on this lens will give the shooter up to 5.0 stops of shake correction, but that jumps up to 7.0 stops when paired with an EOS R body that has in-body image stabilizer (IS).

This lens has a minimum focus distance of approximately 0.28 meters, but the photographer can get that down to 0.13 meters when using manual focus at 15mm. Like the 24mm, it has Canon STM focus drives, suited to smooth, quiet video AF operation. And like its prime sibling, it too is a lightweight lens, weighing in at just 392 grams.

The RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM will be available in late August for $550.
