Canon brings C-Log 3, dual-card recording to R6 and 1D X Mark III cameras via firmware updates

Canon has released new firmware updates for its EOS 1D X Mark III DSLR and EOS R6 mirrorless camera systems. The substantial updates bring, amongst other bug fixes and improvements, the ability to record video in Canon Log 3 and record to two memory cards simultaneously.

Canon EOS R6

First up is firmware update 1.4.0 for the Canon EOS R6. This updates adds Canon Log 3 as a new setting in the camera’s Canon Log settings, as well as the ability to record on both ‘card 1’ and ‘card 2’ when shooting video. The update also improves stability when using the new RF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF 600mm F4 L IS USM lenses, and fixes two issues: one wherein the HDMI out will show a zebra pattern after the camera’s screen turns off and one where image stabilization activation is delayed when shooting (sounds like a similar fix to the one Sony implemented for its latest a1 firmware update).

You can download firmware version 1.4.0 for the Canon EOS R6 for macOS and Windows computers on Canon’s website:

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

Next up is firmware version 1.5.0 for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. Just as with the EOS R6, this firmware update adds the ability to record with Canon Log 3 as well as the ability to record footage simultaneously to both card slots. Canon has also added support for VPG Profile 4.0, the latest Video Performance Guarantee (VPG) specification from the CompactFlash association, and has fixed an issue where switching from Still Photo mode to Movie Mode wouldn’t change the settings accordingly.

Below is a comparison from Canon showing the difference between recording with Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3:
