Canon Australia says ‘very small number’ of EOS R5C units affected by autofocus issues

Update (Wednesday March 23, 2022 at 8am ET): Regarding units affected in other areas, a Canon representative said ‘Canon Americas EOS R5 C units were updated and corrected before distribution within the territory.’

Update (Friday March 25, 2022 at 12pm ET): The original version of this article stated this was a recall of Canon EOS R5C units. While Canon is seeking out affected units, Canon has clarified that this issue has not met the threshold for a full recall and as such we have updated our article and headline accordingly.

Canon Australia has posted a notice on its website notifying consumers that some early EOS R5C units are being affected by a manufacturing defect that causes the camera to go in and out of focus when using autofocus for video shooting.

Canon Australia says its ‘aware that a very small number of units have been delivered to customers prior to this issue being identified’ and are asking consumers who received their EOS R5C units ‘on or before March 21, 2022 and are experiencing this issue to organize a return of the unit from the retailer from which it was purchased from. It doesn’t appear as though Canon has any particular range of serial numbers specifically affected by this issue, so if you have an EOS R5C in hand, just stay vigilant.

DPReview has been able to confirm that units in the EU and North America are not — and will not be — impacted by this issue. Below is the entire statement from Canon Australia.
