Canon Adds Video-Focused Firmware Updates for 1DX Mark III, R5, R6

Canon has released a set of updates to the EOS 1DX Mark III, R5, and R6 that improves the experience of all three cameras, and give especially the R5 additional video features. The update includes the addition of Canon Log 3 on the R5, as well as a low bitrate recording option on all three cameras.

The updates were announced on Canon’s Twitter. Photographer and YouTuber Gordan Laing has published the following video that covers the changes to the EOS R5:

The EOS R5 was the recipient of the most updates of the three cameras. Of note, Canon has granted the ability for the camera to shoot in C-Log 3 and also added RAW Light to video recording options to reduce the file size of 8K and 4K videos, which enables lower bitrate shooting. Canon also added the ability for the camera to capture up both 119.9 and 100 frames per second in Full HD 1080p recording. The company also added electronic full-time manual focus, which allows manual focus adjustment to always be possible with both One-shot AF and Servo AF.

Canon also states that support for shooting in Canon C-Log 3 in RAW video is coming to the camera in a future firmware update.

Other updates: The R5 now includes the ability to have the camera’s monitor turned off at all times during shooting. The transfer time (estimated) during FTP transfers is now displayed, and you can now select protected images that failed to be transferred and protected images that have not yet been transferred and transfer them all at once. Canon also enabled the ability to save/load camera settings to a card.

Canon also addressed three bugs: The update fixes a phenomenon, in which the camera does not function normally when using certain CFexpress cards, fixed an issue where the camera cannot function normally when the drive mode is set to “High-speed continuous shooting” to shoot still images continuously and fixed a phenomenon in which the power may become suspended when the camera is powered via USB for an extended period of time.

The EOS R6 is also receiving the low-bitrate recording option and electronic full-time manual focus, and FTP transfer status display. The company also promises that C-LOG 3 is coming to the R6 in a future firmware update. Canon also addressed two bugs: where the camera does not function normally when the drive mode is set to “High-speed continuous shooting” to shoot still images continuously, where it may corrupt the image displayed in the EVF, and where the camera may get suspended when connected to USB power for an extended period of time.

The 1DX Mark III is also getting the low-bitrate recording option, FTP file status display, and also sees improved connection reliability when using FTP and USB at the same time. Canon promises that C-Log 3, just like with the R6, will be coming at a later date.

You can download the 1DX Mark III firmware version 1.4.0 here.

Canon also announced two firmware updates for two lenses: the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM version 1.1.0 and the RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1L IS USM version 1.0.9. Both lenses get support for electronic full-time manual focus and the update also improves an issue where the background is not blurred when performing a slow pan with IS set to Mode 2 or 3.
