Ark Invest Applauds as Coinbase Pulls Index Managers Deep Into Crypto Territory

Coinbase’s S&P 500 debut forces index managers to buy in, validating Ark’s bold, research-driven bet and catapulting crypto into Wall Street’s financial mainstream.

Ark Invest to Index Funds: You Can’t Ignore Coinbase Anymore

Cathie Wood, chief executive of Ark Investment Management (Ark Invest), clarified her stance on crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) following its inclusion in the S&P 500 by addressing the distinction between active and index-sensitive investment strategies.

“Well deserved recognition, Brian Armstrong and Coinbase!” Wood stated in a post on social media platform X on May 12. The executive added:

While you probably agree that active managers should depend on fundamental research, not index providers, to screen for stocks, Ark Invest is pleased that index-sensitive managers will be compelled to consider COIN now.

Coinbase, the largest publicly traded cryptocurrency platform in the U.S., is now the first and only crypto-native company to be added to the S&P 500. While the move compels passive funds and index-tracking managers to include Coinbase in their portfolios, Wood used the occasion to reaffirm Ark Invest’s strategy of research-driven, active stock selection over passive adherence to benchmark indexes. Ark has been a vocal supporter of Coinbase, holding significant positions in its innovation-focused funds. The firm invested in the company based on its own analysis well before Coinbase’s inclusion in the index.

The announcement of Coinbase joining the S&P 500 index triggered a major surge in Coinbase’s stock. In a note dated May 13, Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani projected that Coinbase could receive up to $16 billion in capital inflows, including $9 billion from passive S&P 500 index funds and $7 billion from active investors. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong encapsulated the significance of the milestone, stating: It just became the first and only crypto company to join the S&P 500. This milestone represents what the true believers, from retail investors to institutional investors to our employees and partners, knew all along. Crypto is here to stay.” This achievement underscores a broader institutional validation of the crypto space, positioning it more firmly within the traditional financial ecosystem.
