Apple to launch new MacBook Air and 13″ MacBook Pro later this year with M2 chip

A couple of days ago, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple will launch a new MacBook Air later this year with an M1 chip at the helm. However, a new report by 9to5Mac contradicts Kuo, saying the new MacBook Air will be powered by the M2 chip instead.

The publication claims that the new MacBook Air is codenamed J413 and is expected to arrive in a single version with the M2 chip under the hood. The M2 chip has the codename “Staten,” and it is based on the A15 SoC. Like the M1, the M2 will also have an eight-core CPU, but it will come with a 10-core GPU.

Also, in case it wasn’t clear, the M2 will be a successor to the vanilla M1, but Apple is reportedly working on M2 Pro, M2 Max, and M2 Ultra.

The source also corroborates rumors of Apple launching an M2-powered 13″ MacBook Pro in 2022. It is codenamed J493. However, the laptop might be launched as just “MacBook” since Apple is considering dropping the “Pro” moniker for this machine.

There’s no word from Apple about the launch of these laptops yet, but we expect these to arrive later this year.
