Apple starts rolling out eighth beta of iOS, iPadOS and its watch and TV OSes

Apple is still putting the finishing touches on the upcoming versions of the operating systems of its smart gadgets. The company has started rolling out new beta versions and there may be one more before the final versions come out.

The changelog at this point has crystallized, these last few releases focus on squashing bugs. This is the eight round of betas with a new one coming about once a week, so there’s time for one more before the expected mid-September launch of the iPhone 13 series.

Those phones will come with iOS 15 out of the box. New features include spatial audio support for FaceTime, the ability to share your screen and more. Apple Maps is getting AR directions that show detailed 3D visuals to help you get around (note: SharePlay will arrive later).

There is a chance (but no guarantee) of new tablets at the event. Even if there aren’t any, iPad users haveiPadOS version 15 to look forward to. It is bringing improved multitasking, widget support for the home screen and App Library (which was available on phones with iOS 14, but not on tablets).

The new Apple Watch Series 7 is all but certain to be unveiled (with new design and dimensions), which will be the first to get watchOS 8 with improved Photos and Fitness apps and more.

tvOS 15 also received a new beta, though that is relevant to existing models – we haven’t heard anything of a new Apple TV coming in September (a new generation came out in April, so it’s too soon for upgrades).

Of course, the new iPhone 13 and Watch Series 7 devices will come with the new OSes pre-installed. These public betas are for older devices – when it comes to phones, all models running iOS 14 will be bumped up to iOS 15 (meaning all the way down to the iPhone 6s).
