The Pulitzer Prize is awarded across multiple categories, two of which are dedicated to photography: Breaking News Photography and Feature Photography.

“Yam delivered pictures of unspeakable tragedy and abiding emotion despite a manhandling by one of the insurgents, the near-constant menace of other fighters and the abundant technical hurdles of transmitting images out of a war zone,” the LA Times writes.

“Yam’s award was the 49th Pulitzer Prize for The Times since 1942, including six gold medals for public service.”
Yam’s photos, which are described by the Pulitzer Prize Board as “raw” and “urgent” as the United States departed from Afghanistan, can be seen in a gallery on the Pulitzer webiste.
The Feature Photography category was won by Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo, Amit Dave, and the late Danish Siddiqui of Reuters for their coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in India. Siddiqui, who had previously won a Pulitzer for photography, was killed on assignment in Afghanistan in July of 2021. His death was originally attributed to crossfire, but later new reports determined he was killed after he was abandoned in the confusion of a retreat.
