2020 iPhones to have sensor-shift image stabilization

The 2020 iPhones are expected to bring a significant upgrade over its predecessors in 2019 but the latest rumor sounds more like an under the hood improvement. According to industry observers, the new iPhones would use sensor-shift image stabilization technology instead of the conventional stabilization of the optics.

iPhones in 2020 to have sensor-shift image stabilization

iPhones – and smartphones in general – normally rely on optical image stabilization whereas the upcoming phones are expected to come with sensor-shift stabilization where the sensor itself is moving to counteract shakes instead of the optics.

It’s unclear for now whether Apple is doing it for better camera performance, image quality or it’s looking to save up some precious space and thus reduce the camera bumps on the back. The reasons could also be cost-related.

In any case, we still have too little information regarding the sensor-shift technology so we would have to wait for it to unfold.
